The Waiska River starts its journey in Michigan. It flows through an area called Superior Township. This township is located in Chippewa County. The river then reaches its end point at Waiska Bay. This bay is part of the St. Marys River. The St. Marys River is found near the eastern end of Lake Superior. Lake Superior is one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world.
How the River Got Its Name
The name "Waiska" has an interesting history. It comes from the name of Waishke. Waishke was the first son of a powerful Anishinaabe chief. This chief was named Waubojeeg. He was a leader from Chequamegon Bay. This bay is located in the western part of Lake Superior. Today, that area is in Wisconsin.
Waishke moved to the St. Mary's area around 1793. He came after his half-sister, Oshauguscadaywayquay, married a fur trader named John Johnston. Waishke later became a chief himself. He led the Anishinaabeg people in this area. The river was named in his honor.
