Waldorf pudding is a sweet dessert that first appeared in the early 1900s. There are two different recipes for it that were published back then. Even though it shares a name with the famous Waldorf salad, Waldorf pudding has no known connection to the Waldorf Hotel in New York City, which is where the Waldorf salad was created.
What Was Waldorf Pudding on the Titanic?
A dessert called Waldorf pudding was served to first-class passengers on the RMS Titanic on April 14, 1912. The exact recipe for this dessert from the Titanic is still a mystery today. It might have been a special recipe used only by the White Star Line, the company that owned the ship.
Some people have guessed that the Titanic's Waldorf pudding might have used ingredients like apples, walnuts, and raisins. These are the main ingredients in Waldorf salad. However, there is no proof that these items were actually in the pudding served on the Titanic. In fact, the chefs at the Waldorf Hotel had never even heard of Waldorf pudding around the time the Titanic sank!
We do have a better idea of what Waldorf pudding was like from a menu on the RMS Olympic, another ship from the same company, in 1914. This menu describes Waldorf pudding as a creamy vanilla pudding. It was flavored with a little bit of nutmeg and had small pieces of apple and sultana grapes mixed in.
