Walking with Dinosaurs facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Walking with Dinosaurs is a cool TV show made by the BBC in 1999. It's like a nature documentary, but instead of showing animals today, it shows how dinosaurs lived millions of years ago! The show uses amazing computer graphics and models to bring these ancient creatures to life, making it feel like you're really watching them in their natural habitats.

The series takes you on a journey through different time periods when dinosaurs roamed the Earth. You'll see all sorts of dinosaurs, from tiny ones to giant long-necked plant-eaters, and even fierce meat-eaters. It also shows the plants and other animals that lived alongside them.

About Walking with Dinosaurs

Walking with Dinosaurs was a huge success because it made learning about dinosaurs exciting and easy to understand. It combined scientific facts with a storytelling style, making it feel like you were watching a real nature film. The creators worked with scientists to make sure the dinosaurs looked and acted as accurately as possible based on what we know from fossils.

The Episodes

The series has six main episodes, each focusing on a different time or group of dinosaurs:

New Beginnings

The first episode, "New Blood," takes you back to the Triassic period. It follows a small, fast dinosaur called a Coelophysis as it tries to find food and water during a very dry season. You'll see how tough life was for early dinosaurs.

Giants of the Past

"Time of the Titans" is the second episode. It shows the amazing life of a baby Diplodocus, one of the largest dinosaurs ever! You get to see it grow up and learn how these massive plant-eaters lived in herds.

Life in the Ocean

The third episode, "A Cruel Sea," is all about the dangers of the ancient oceans. It follows a group of flying reptiles called Rhamphorhynchus as they try to survive deadly storms and avoid dangerous sea creatures.

Sky Migrators

"King of the Skies" features a huge flying reptile called an Ornithocheirus. This episode shows a sick male Ornithocheirus on a long journey, flying all the way to Spain to find a place to lay its eggs.

Surviving the Cold

"Spirits of the Frozen Forest" takes you to a colder part of the dinosaur world. It follows a baby Leaellynasaura, a small dinosaur that lived in what is now Australia, as it tries to avoid a hungry Koolasuchus, which was a giant salamander about 4 meters long!

The End of an Era

The last episode, "Last of the Dino Dynasty," is set at the very end of the dinosaur age. It follows a female Tyrannosaurus as she cares for her babies. This episode shows the world getting ready for a huge event that changed everything – the Kt extinction, which was a time when many volcanoes were active and a giant asteroid hit Earth, leading to the end of the dinosaurs.

Other Adventures

Besides the main series, there's also a movie from 2013 with the same name, Walking with Dinosaurs. There are also other related shows: a sequel called Walking with Beasts which is about mammals after the dinosaurs, and a prequel called Walking with Monsters which explores life before the dinosaurs.
