Park History: How Wall Doxey State Park Began

Wall Doxey State Park is one of the very first state parks in Mississippi. It was built in the 1930s. Back then, it was known as Spring Lake.

The park was created by a group called the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The CCC was a special program during the Great Depression. It helped young men find jobs building parks and other public projects. They started working on the park in 1935, and it opened to visitors in 1938.

Another group, the National Youth Administration, also helped. They added a cabin to the park in 1938. In 1956, the park was renamed to honor a Mississippi politician named Wall Doxey.

Fun Things to Do at Wall Doxey State Park

Wall Doxey State Park offers many exciting activities for visitors. You can enjoy a day of fishing in the lake. The park also has places to stay overnight.

  • Camping: There are both simple, "primitive" campsites and more developed ones.
  • Cabins: You can rent cozy cabins and cottages for a comfortable stay.
  • Nature Trails: Explore the park on a 2.5-mile nature trail. It's a great way to see local plants and animals.
