Walter Lee Powell (born November 23, 1991) is a former American football player. He played as a wide receiver and a return specialist. A wide receiver catches passes from the quarterback. A return specialist runs back kickoffs and punts. Walt played college football at Murray State. He was later chosen by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2014 NFL draft. After his time in the NFL, Powell helped create a mobile app called Politiscope.

College Football Days

Walt Powell played college football for the Murray State Racers. He was a very good player during his time there. In 2013, he was recognized as one of the top players. He finished 17th in the voting for the Walter Payton Award. This award goes to the best offensive player in his division.

Playing in the NFL

Walt Powell started his professional career in 2014. He was picked by the Arizona Cardinals in the NFL draft. The NFL draft is where professional teams choose new players from college.

Arizona Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals selected Powell in the sixth round. This was the 196th pick overall in the 2014 draft. However, he was released by the team before the regular season began.

New York Jets

The New York Jets quickly signed Powell after he was released. He joined their team on September 1, 2014. In his first year, he played in four games. He returned 8 kickoffs for 233 yards. He also returned 12 punts for 48 yards.

In 2015, Powell had a great play in a preseason game. He returned a punt 59 yards for a touchdown. Even with this good performance, the Jets released him again. But they signed him to their practice squad the very next day. A practice squad is a group of players who train with the team. They can be called up to play in games if needed.

Buffalo Bills (First Time)

The Buffalo Bills signed Walt Powell to their practice squad. This happened on October 6, 2015.

Oakland Raiders

On October 16, 2015, the Oakland Raiders signed Powell. They moved him from the Bills' practice squad to their main team. However, he was released by the Raiders a few weeks later.

Buffalo Bills (Second Time)

Walt Powell returned to the Buffalo Bills on November 6, 2015. He was first on their practice squad again. Later, on December 22, 2015, he was moved to the active roster. This meant he could play in games.

In November 2016, Powell got an ankle injury. Because of this, he was placed on injured reserve. This means he couldn't play for the rest of the season. After a suspension, Powell was released by the Bills in October 2017.

Walt Powell decided to focus on a new path after his football career. He wrote an article for The Players' Tribune. In it, he shared that NFL teams asked him to try out in 2019. But he chose not to return to football.

Instead, he wanted to work on a mobile app. The app is called Politiscope. He teamed up with his brother, Brandon Williams, to create it. Brandon also used to be an NFL player. The Politiscope app was launched on January 17, 2019.
