Walter Gill (born October 13, 1851 – died July 17, 1929) was a very important person in South Australia. He worked as a forest manager, helping to look after the state's trees and forests. He was also a FLS, which means he was recognized by a special group of scientists who study nature.

Walter Gill's Life and Work

Walter Gill was born in Northamptonshire, England. His father, Rev. Walter Gill, was a minister. Before moving to Australia, Walter worked in banking from 1869 to 1876.

In 1876, he moved to South Australia. He started working for the government in 1884. By 1886, he became the chief forester at a place called Wirrabara. This meant he was in charge of managing the forests there.

In 1890, Walter Gill was promoted to Conservator of Forests. This was a very important job, as he was responsible for all the forests in South Australia. He kept this role until he retired in 1923. After he retired, Edward Julius took over his position.

One of Walter Gill's biggest achievements was realizing how useful the Pinus insignis tree could be. This tree is now known as the Radiata Pine. He was the first to see that it could be grown for commercial purposes, meaning it could be used to make money for the state.

Walter Gill was also known for his beautiful private garden at his home in Malvern.

Walter Gill's Family

Walter Gill married Elizabeth Frances Hiddlestone on October 12, 1885. Elizabeth was from Launceston, Tasmania. They had four children together:

  • Frederick Gill (born September 25, 1886) lived in Somerville, Victoria.
  • Edgar Alfred Gill (born December 10, 1887) married Marjorie Bruce Gouldsmith Fielder in 1921. They lived in Sydney.
  • William Ernest Gill (born October 14, 1889 – died 1967) married Annie Doreen Axford in 1925. They lived in Keith, South Australia.
  • Hilda Beatrice Gill (born 1894 – died 1975) was a talented musician. She studied at Methodist Ladies' College and won a special scholarship to the Elder Conservatorium in 1914.

How Walter Gill Was Remembered

Walter Gill received special honors for his work and contributions:

  • He was chosen as a Fellow of the Linnean Society of London. This is a very old and respected group for people who study plants and animals.
  • His name is on a bronze plaque on the Jubilee 150 Walkway in North Terrace, Adelaide. This walkway celebrates important people and events in South Australia's history.
