Walter Roger Martos Ruiz (born February 11, 1957) was a Peruvian military general and a politician. He served as the Prime Minister of Peru for a short time, from August to November 2020. This was during the time Martín Vizcarra was president. Before that, he was the Minister of Defense from October 2019 to August 2020.
As a high-ranking officer, a major-general, in the Peruvian Army, Martos held many important military jobs during his career.

Walter Martos's Army Career
Walter Martos was born in a city called Cajamarca in northern Peru. After finishing high school, he joined the Chorrillos Military School. He graduated in 1978, specializing in Engineering. He also earned advanced degrees from the Army's Superior War College and its Scientific and Technological Institute.
During his time in the army, he held several key leadership roles. He was the Secretary General of the Army General Command. He also led the Education and Doctrine Command of the Peruvian Army. In 2011, he became the Commander General of the Northern Military Region. Later, he served as the Chief of General Staff of the Army. In 2013, he became the Chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Armed Forces.
He also worked in military education. He was the director of the Army Language Center. He served as the academic deputy director and director of the Military School of Chorrillos. He also directed the School of Engineering and the Superior School of War.
Political Roles of Walter Martos
Minister of Defense (2019–2020)
On October 3, 2019, after retiring from the army, Martos became the Minister of Defense. He joined the group of ministers, called a "cabinet," led by Vicente Zeballos. This was part of President Martín Vizcarra's government. He took over from Jorge Moscoso. This change happened after the Peruvian Congress was closed down a few days earlier.
Prime Minister of Peru (2020)
On August 6, 2020, President Martín Vizcarra chose Martos to be the Prime Minister of Peru. This happened after the Congress did not approve the previous group of ministers led by Pedro Cateriano.
Martos served as Prime Minister for about three months. He and his cabinet resigned on November 9, 2020. This was because President Vizcarra was removed from his position by the Congress.
