Walter Trampler (born August 25, 1915 – died September 27, 1997) was a talented German musician and teacher. He played two special string instruments: the viola and the viola d'amore.

Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Walter Trampler was born in Munich, Germany. He started learning music at just six years old from his father, who was a violinist. Even as a young person, Walter was very good at playing the viola. He became so skilled that he toured around Europe as the violist for the famous Strub Quartet. He even made recordings with other well-known musicians during the 1930s. Later, he became the main violist for the Berlin Radio Orchestra.

In 1939, he moved to the United States. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, he returned to his passion for music. He spent his time teaching, performing, and making recordings.

A Life in Music and Teaching

Walter Trampler loved music from many different time periods. He played everything from old Baroque music to pieces written in the 20th century. His playing was so inspiring that a famous composer named Luciano Berio even wrote a special piece just for him!

He made many recordings and performed often in Europe and the United States. He was a chamber musician, which means he played in small groups with other musicians. Walter was also one of the first members of The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. He later joined the Yale Quartet as their violist.

Besides performing, Walter Trampler was a dedicated teacher. He taught many students at top music schools like Juilliard, the New England Conservatory, the Yale School of Music, and Boston University.

Later Years

Walter Trampler passed away in 1997 in Port Joli, Nova Scotia, Canada.
