Exploring Walton Township
The History of Walton Township
Walton Township has a cool history! People started looking at land here as early as 1832. The very first settler, Captain James W. Hickok, arrived in 1836. He was also the first postmaster for the area, which was then called East Bellevue.
Walton Township officially became a township in 1839. Parlery P. Shumway, who was the second person to settle there, became its first supervisor.
Towns and Communities in Walton Township
Walton Township is home to a few interesting places:
- The city of Olivet is in the southwest part of the township. It's the only city that is fully part of the township. Most of Walton Township uses the Olivet ZIP code 49076.
- The city of Charlotte is just north of Walton Township. Some areas in the northern part of Walton Township use the Charlotte ZIP code 48813.
- Ainger was once a train station on the Grand Trunk Railway. It even had a post office from 1882 to 1910. It was likely named after a state official, Daniel B. Ainger.
- East Walton was a rural post office. It was open from 1866 to 1864, named for its location in the eastern part of the township.
- Five Points Corner is a named spot south of Charlotte. It's special because it's where four different townships meet: Walton, Brookfield, Eaton, and Carmel.
- Moore's or Moore's Station was another train station. It was on the Chicago and Lake Huron Railroad north of Olivet in 1876.
- Walton was the name of an old post office in the township. It first opened in 1838 as East Bellevue. After the township was formed, it was renamed Walton in 1840 and stayed open until 1849.
