The very first official meeting for the area, which was then called "Fontana," happened on April 4, 1843. This important town meeting took place in a schoolhouse on Big Foot Prairie.

At this meeting, the town's first leaders were chosen. George H. Lown was elected as the Chairman of the "Supervisors." Other people were also chosen for important roles. These included assistants to the Chairman, a Clerk to keep records, and a Treasurer to manage money. There were also three School Commissioners to help with schools, and three Highway Commissioners to look after roads. An Assessor helped figure out property values for taxes, and a Collector gathered those taxes. Three Constables were chosen to help keep order, and a Moderator led the meeting.

The people at the meeting also decided how much money to raise for different needs. They voted to collect money for general expenses, to help people in need, and to support the local schools.
