History of Wamoon
Wamoon once had its own Post Office. It opened in July 1920. However, it closed many years later in 1983.
For a time, Wamoon was not officially recognized. In 1993, the Geographical Names Board of New South Wales removed Wamoon from its list of places. This meant it was no longer in official government records. But in May 2006, the Board decided to put Wamoon back on the map. It was officially recognized as a village again.
Sports in Wamoon
Wamoon is known for its strong rugby league team. The village shares a team with nearby Yanco. They are called the Yanco-Wamoon Hawks.
The Hawks are famous for winning many games. They won five championships in a row from 1992 to 1996. This was a record for the Group 20 Rugby League competition. For a few years, from 2012 to 2014, the team joined with rivals from Narrandera. They played as the Bidgee Hurricanes. But before the 2015 season, the teams separated again. The Yanco-Wamoon Hawks returned to playing on their own.
