The Wanamara (also called Wunumara) were an Aboriginal Australian people. They lived in the state of Queensland, Australia.
Where the Wanamara Lived
The Wanamara people lived on a large area of land. According to Norman Tindale, a famous researcher, their traditional lands covered about 33,700 square kilometers (or 13,000 square miles).
Their country stretched from the start of the Flinders River in the west. It went east all the way to Richmond. To the west, their land reached the Williams River, close to Cloncurry.
In the south, their territory touched the Great Dividing Range and went as far as Kynuna. To the north, they lived near places like Cambridge Downs and Dalgonally.
Other Names for the Wanamara
Sometimes, Aboriginal groups are known by different names or spellings. This can happen because people heard the names differently. The Wanamara people were also known by several other names, including:
- Wunamara
- Woonamurra
- Woonomurra
- Unamara
- Oonoomurra
- Quippen-bura (This might have been a group living further north, near Richmond.)
