Kynuna is a small outback town in Queensland, Australia. It's also a locality, which means it's an area that covers parts of two different local government areas: the Shire of McKinlay and the Shire of Winton. In 2021, only 52 people lived in Kynuna.
Where Kynuna Is
Kynuna is located right next to the Diamantina River. You can find it along the Landsborough Highway, which is about 1,521 kilometres (945 miles) north-west of Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland. It's also about 303 kilometres (188 miles) south-east of a bigger town called Mount Isa. Part of the Richmond–Winton Road also runs along Kynuna's south-eastern edge.
Kynuna is near the edge of a huge, round area, about 130 kilometres (81 miles) wide. Scientists from Geoscience Australia think this area might be a "crustal anomaly." This means there's something unusual happening deep under the Earth's surface here. They believe it might have been caused by an asteroid strike about 300 million years ago.
Kynuna's Past
The land around Kynuna was originally home to the Wanamara people. Their traditional lands stretched from the north down to Kynuna. The Wanamarra language is an Australian Aboriginal language spoken in North West Queensland. It was used in areas like the Shire of McKinlay, Shire of Cloncurry, and Shire of Richmond, including the Flinders River area and the towns of Kynuna and Richmond.
The town of Kynuna started as a camp for shearers, who are people who shear sheep. It was a good spot because five roads met at the Diamantina River, making it easy to get supplies. The town was officially named and recorded in 1894. Soon after, it grew quite a bit, with about 700 people living there and even three pubs!
The Kynuna Post Office first opened in 1883, but it closed in 1990. A school called Kynuna Provisional School opened in 1899. It later became Kynuna State School in 1909, but it closed its doors in 1992.
Learning in Kynuna
There are no schools in Kynuna today. The closest primary school is Julia Creek State School, which is in the nearby town of Julia Creek to the north. Since there are no high schools close by, students often learn through distance education (learning from home) or attend boarding schools.
What Kynuna Has Today
Today, Kynuna has one pub, which is called the Blue Heeler Hotel. This hotel was originally built in 1889 and was known as the Kynuna Hotel.
