Where the Wangan People Lived
The Wangan people traditionally lived on a large area of land. Experts believe their territory covered about 7,800 square kilometers (3,000 square miles). This land was centered around a place called Capella.
Their country stretched north towards Blair Athol. To the east, it reached the beautiful Peak Ranges. Westward, their land extended to the [Drummond Range]. The Wangan people also lived near Peak Downs.
Wangan Family Groups
Within the Wangan people, there were different family groups or communities. One known group was called the Babbinburra. This group lived in the area between Mistake Creek and Clermont.
The word -burra was a special ending added to names. It meant 'tribe' or 'people' in their language. This shows how different groups were connected through their language.
Recent Challenges and History
In recent times, the descendants of the Wangan people have faced challenges. They have been involved in important legal discussions with the Queensland and Federal governments. These talks are about a large project called the Carmichael coal mine.
This mine project is run by a company called the Adani Group. The Wangan people, along with the Jagalingou people, are working to protect their traditional lands and heritage. They want to make sure their sacred places are respected.
