The Wangapeka River is a river located in the Tasman District of New Zealand's South Island. It's a natural waterway that flows through some beautiful parts of the country.

About the Wangapeka River

The Wangapeka River starts in two main parts. These are called the North Branch and the South Branch. Both branches begin in the Matiri Range. This mountain range is inside the amazing Kahurangi National Park.

Where the River Flows

The two branches of the river meet up about 25 kilometres southeast of a place called Karamea. From there, the river generally flows towards the northeast. Its journey ends when it joins the Motueka River. This meeting point is about 30 kilometres south of the town of Motueka. The river is about 37 kilometres long in total.

A Bit of History: Gold!

Long ago, in the late 1860s, the valley where the Wangapeka River flows was a very busy place. It was a major goldfield. This means many people came here hoping to find gold.

The river's history is even part of a famous song! The Wangapeka valley is mentioned in some versions of the old New Zealand folk song called "Bright Fine Gold." This shows how important the area was during the gold rush days.
