Want facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A want is something you would really like to have. It's a wish or a strong desire for something. You can choose whether or not to have a want. This is different from a need, which is something you must have to survive or be healthy.

Sometimes people say they "need" something when they actually just "want" it. For example, you need to eat food to live. But you might want to eat a delicious piece of cake. If there's no cake, you can still eat something else, like bread, to meet your need for food. Your hunger (need) goes away, but you might still wish you had that cake (want). If you get the cake, both your need and your want are met!

What is a Want in Economics?

In the world of economics, a want usually refers to goods or services that people desire. Since resources are limited, people often have to make a choice about how to get what they want. This means deciding which wants to satisfy when there are many different options.

Want and Poverty

The word "want" can also describe a situation where someone is poor, hungry, or doesn't have enough money. A famous writer named Charles Dickens wrote a book called A Christmas Carol. In this story, there are two sad children named Want and Ignorance. They represent the problems of poverty and lack of education in society.
