Need facts for kids
A need is something that a living thing, like a person, animal, or plant, absolutely must have to stay alive and healthy. If they don't have it, they can't survive.
A want is something you would like to have, but you can still live perfectly fine without it. For example, you might want a new video game, but you don't need it to survive.
Every person has certain basic needs for their body. Humans need water, food, clothing, and shelter to live. Water is the most important because a person can die very quickly without drinking water. In a warm place, food is the next most important need. In a cold place, clothes or shelter might be more important because a person could quickly die from the cold without them.

What Are Other Human Needs?
Beyond the basic physical needs, humans also have needs for their mind and feelings. People often say that a person needs love, family, and friends. These are needs for personal relationships. While a life can be much better with good relationships, some friends or relationships can sometimes be difficult. Good relationships can bring a lot of happiness. Thinking about a need that seems impossible to get can make a person very unhappy.
How Do Scientists Study Needs?
Some parts of philosophy involve asking deep questions like, "What does a human truly need?"
Scientists also study the needs of human and animal minds and bodies. The study of the mind is called psychology, which means 'words about the mind'. The study of bodily needs is part of medicine.
