Ward is a small, unincorporated community in Kanawha County, West Virginia. An unincorporated community means it's not officially a city or town with its own local government. Ward is also known as a coal town because its history is closely tied to coal mining.
Ward is located about 3 miles (5 kilometers) northeast of Cedar Grove. It sits along a waterway called Kellys Creek.
The Name of Ward
People have different ideas about how Ward got its name. Some believe it was named after a person called Ward Hudnall.
Early Stories About the Name
Older records suggest the community was named after David Ward. He owned the land where the town of Ward was built. David Ward lived in Michigan. He leased his land to a company called the Kelly's Creek Colliery Company.
How the Town Was Built
A coal magazine, The Black Diamond, reported in 1904 that the Kelly's Creek Colliery Company built the town of Ward very quickly. They finished building it in just four months. David Ward's son, Charles Willis Ward, was an important leader in the Kelly's Creek Colliery Company. Much of the land in Ward is still owned by David Ward's family today.
