About Ward Cove

Ward Cove is a quiet bay in a beautiful part of Alaska. It's known for its natural setting and its connection to a local stream.

Ward Cove Stream

A stream called Ward Cove Stream flows into the head of the bay. This stream is the outlet for a series of lakes. The stream flows south over a rocky bottom. It has a fast current and is surrounded by tall, wooded banks. The water in the stream is quite clear. It is about 0.75 miles long. Near the lake, the stream is about 20 feet wide and 0.75 feet deep. The water flows at about 3 knots, which is quite fast!

History of the Shoreline

For many years, the north shore of Ward Cove was home to a large factory. This factory was called the Ketchikan Pulp Company. It was built in 1957. The factory processed wood from the Tongass National Forest to make wood pulp. Wood pulp is a main ingredient used to make paper.

The factory closed down in 1997. Most of the old buildings have been taken down. As of 2013, the area was being changed into a new industrial park. This new area includes a place for boats and the main office for the Alaska Marine Highway.
