Warren, Fannin County, Texas facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Warren was once a small but important town in what is now Fannin County, Texas. It was located close to the border with Grayson County, right by the Red River. In the early 1800s, a place called Fort Warren was built here. This fort was important for protecting the area.

The Start of Warren

Warren became a town in the early 19th century. When Fannin County was officially created in 1837, Warren was chosen as its first county seat. A county seat is like the main city or town in a county. It's where the local government offices are, like the courthouse. This made Warren a very important place for the people living in Fannin County at that time.

Why Warren Declined

Warren's importance didn't last forever. In 1843, just six years after it became the county seat, the government decided to move the county seat to Bonham. This was a big change for Warren. When the main government offices left, many people and businesses started to move away too. This began a period where Warren slowly became less important.

Warren During the Civil War

Even though it was declining, Warren still played a role during the Civil War (1861-1865). It served as a logistical station for the Confederacy. This means it was a place where supplies, like food, weapons, and other important items, were stored and moved to support the soldiers.

The Railroad's Impact

After the Civil War ended, new railroads were built across the country. These railroads helped towns grow by making it easier to transport goods and people. However, the railroad lines were built in a way that completely bypassed Warren. This meant that trains didn't stop there, and the town couldn't benefit from the new transportation system. Without the railroad, Warren continued to shrink. Its post office, which handled mail, closed in 1876. Eventually, the town became completely empty.

The Old Courthouse

In the 1920s, the original courthouse building from Warren was moved. People hoped to take it to Bonham and make it a historic landmark. However, this plan was never fully completed.
