About the Center
The Warren G. Harding Presidential Library and Museum is a modern facility. It was officially opened to the public on May 12, 2021. The opening was originally planned for September 2020, but it was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Location and History
The center is located in Marion, Ohio. It sits right next to the Harding Home. The Harding Home is a historic house museum where President Harding used to live. The original opening date was chosen to celebrate 100 years since Warren G. Harding won the 1920 United States presidential election.
Project Development
The idea for this project was announced on April 12, 2016. It cost $7.5 million to build. The project was a team effort by Harding 2020. This group included the Harding Home, Marion Technical College, and the Ohio History Connection. Both of Ohio's U.S. Senators at the time, Sherrod Brown and Rob Portman, helped lead the project.
What You Can See Inside
The center is a large building, about 15,000 square feet. It has many interactive exhibits. These exhibits help visitors learn about President Harding's time in office. The museum also displays artifacts and items that belonged to President Harding and his wife, Florence Harding.
Presidential Papers and Restoration
The center is also home to Harding's important presidential papers. These papers were previously kept at the Ohio History Connection's main office in Columbus, Ohio, since 1963. In addition to the new center, about $1.3 million was spent to restore the Harding Home. This restoration made the home and its grounds look just like they did in 1920.
Why This Center Matters
Sherry Hall, who manages the Harding Home, explained why the center is so important. She said it helps visitors learn more about Harding's presidency. Often, textbooks only give a small amount of information about him. Hall believes that President Harding's story deserves to be fully told.
