What is a Presidential Center?

A presidential center, like this one, is a place that keeps important papers, items, and information about a former U.S. president. It helps people understand their time in office and their life. The Warren G. Harding Presidential Center was planned to open around the 100th anniversary of Harding winning the 1920 United States presidential election.

Building the Center

The idea for this center was announced on April 12, 2016. It was a big project that cost about $7.5 million. Many groups worked together to make it happen. These included Harding 2020, the Harding Home, Marion Technical College, and the Ohio History Connection. Even Ohio's U.S. Senators, Sherrod Brown and Rob Portman, helped as honorary co-chairs.

The plan was to build a large center, about 15,000 square feet in size. It was designed to have many cool things for visitors to see and do.

What You'll Find Inside

The center has many interesting things to explore.

  • There are interactive exhibits where you can learn about President Harding in a fun way.
  • You can see artifacts and items that belonged to President Harding and his wife, Florence Harding.
  • The center also keeps all of Harding's important presidential papers. These papers used to be stored in Columbus, Ohio, but now they are safe at the new center.

Besides the new center, about $1.3 million was also spent to fix up the Harding Home. The goal was to make the house and its yard look just like they did in 1920.

Sherry Hall, who manages the Harding Home, said that the center will help people learn more about Harding's presidency. She believes his story is important and deserves to be told.
