The Warren Hickox House is a special house built in 1900 in Kankakee, Illinois. It was designed by a famous architect named Frank Lloyd Wright. This house is a great example of his "Prairie School" style, which means it has long, low lines that fit well with the flat landscape of the American Midwest. The design of this house is similar to ideas Wright shared in a magazine called Ladies' Home Journal.

A House with a Story

Warren Hickox, Jr. was a businessman in Kankakee, Illinois. He worked in real estate and loans. Warren's sister, Anna Hickox Bradley, lived right next door in another house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. That house is called the B. Harley Bradley House.

Wright's Magazine Ideas

The Hickox House was inspired by two articles that Frank Lloyd Wright wrote. These articles were published in a popular magazine called Ladies' Home Journal. The inside of the house was based on an article called "A Home in a Prairie Town." The outside look came from "A Small House with Lots of Room in It."

Some people think these designs might have been influenced by older ideas. They could be linked to an article about "Primitive Chinese House" from a book by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. It is also thought that the builder might have used the Hickox House as an office while the Bradley House was still being built.

How the House Looks

The outside walls of the Warren Hickox House are covered in white plaster. They also have stained wooden parts that add to its unique look. Inside, the walls are also plaster with a sandy finish. The wood inside, except for the oak floors, is a type of pine called Georgia pine. This wood style reminds some people of Tudor buildings.

Similar Designs

The Hickox House has a "mirror-image" twin, which is the F.B. Henderson House in Elmhurst, Illinois. This means they are built exactly opposite to each other. The house also looks very much like the S. A. Foster House in Chicago.

Special Features

The house has four bedrooms and a chimney. Most of its original parts are still there. Only the kitchen entrance and a terrace on the south side have been changed. Experts believe this house is a very important example of Wright's Prairie School designs. It has even been called "one of the single most significant houses" that Wright designed.

Historic Recognition

The Warren Hickox House was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 3, 1978. This means it is recognized as a place important to American history. Later, on August 22, 1986, it was also listed as part of the Riverview Historic District.
