Early Life and Education
Warren Lieberfarb was born into a Jewish family in 1943. His father made children's clothes. Warren studied economics at the University of Pennsylvania. He then earned a master's degree in business from the University of Michigan.
Career in Entertainment
In 1967, Warren started working at Paramount Pictures. He was a financial analyst there. He learned about the idea of putting movies on a disc. His boss asked him to look into new home video technologies.
Later, in 1973, he became a vice president at 20th Century Fox. He worked in telecommunications there.
Leading Warner Home Video
In 1984, Warren Lieberfarb joined Warner Bros. Entertainment. He became the president of Warner Home Video (WHV). This part of Warner Bros. handled home entertainment. He led the company for almost 20 years. During this time, WHV grew a lot.
The Father of DVD
Warren Lieberfarb's biggest achievement at WHV was his role in creating the DVD. Many people call him "The Father of DVD." He had the first idea for the DVD. This idea grew into the DVD format we know today.
The DVD changed the home video business. Before DVDs, people mostly rented movies. With DVDs, people started buying movies more often. This helped movie studios earn a lot more money from home video sales.
