Warren Errol Truss (born 8 October 1948) is a former Australian politician. He was the 16th Deputy Prime Minister of Australia. This is a very important job, like being the second-in-command to the Prime Minister. He also served as a minister in the Australian government.
Mr. Truss was the leader of the National Party of Australia from 2007 until 2016. He was a member of the Australian House of Representatives for the area called Wide Bay. He held this position from 1990 until he retired in 2016.

Early Life and Local Work
Warren Truss was born in a place called Kingaroy, in Queensland, Australia. He went to school at Concordia Lutheran College. Before he became a politician, he worked as a farmer.
He was also involved in his local community. He was a councillor for the Shire of Kingaroy from 1976 to 1990. He even became the Chairman of the Kingaroy Shire Council from 1983 to 1990. This means he helped make decisions for his local area.
Political Journey
Warren Truss first tried to become a politician in 1988. He ran for a seat in the Queensland state parliament. Even though he didn't win that first election, he kept trying.
Entering Federal Parliament
In 1990, Mr. Truss was elected to the Australian Parliament. He became the representative for Wide Bay. This was a safe seat for his party, the Nationals.
When his party, the Liberal/National Coalition, won the election in 1996, he was given important roles. He became a minister, which means he was in charge of different government departments.
Serving as a Minister
From 1999 to 2005, Warren Truss was the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. In this role, he helped make decisions about farming, fishing, and forests in Australia.
Later, he became the Minister for Transport and Regional Services. This job involved looking after roads, railways, and helping different regions of Australia. From 2006 to 2007, he was the Minister for Trade. This meant he helped Australia trade goods with other countries.
Leading the Nationals Party
In 2007, Warren Truss was chosen to be the federal leader of the National Party. This made him a very important person in Australian politics. As leader, he helped guide his party and make big decisions.
He continued to lead the Nationals through several elections. In 2008, the Liberal and National parties in Queensland joined together to form the Liberal National Party. Even so, Mr. Truss remained the federal leader of the Nationals.
Becoming Deputy Prime Minister
In 2013, the Coalition won the federal election. Warren Truss became the Deputy Prime Minister of Australia. This is a very senior role in the government. He worked closely with the Prime Minister, first Tony Abbott and then Malcolm Turnbull.
On 11 February 2016, Mr. Truss announced that he would retire from politics. He stepped down as the Nationals leader and Deputy Prime Minister. Barnaby Joyce took over these roles. Warren Truss's leadership helped his party gain more seats in parliament.
Awards and Recognition
Warren Truss has received several awards for his service to Australia.
- In 2001, he received the Centenary Medal. This award recognized his work as the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.
- In 2014, the local council in his home area named their main building the "Warren Truss Chamber." This was to honor his time as the Mayor of Kingaroy Shire.
- In 2019, he was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia. This is a very high honor in Australia. It recognized his important work in parliament, especially in trade, transport, and helping rural areas.
