Warren Errol Truss (born 8 October 1948) is a former Australian politician. He held important roles in the Australian government. He was the Deputy Prime Minister, which means he was the second-in-command to the Prime Minister. He also served as the Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development. This job involved looking after roads, buildings, and helping different areas of Australia grow.

Mr. Truss was also the leader of a political group called the National Party (often called The Nationals). He led the party from 2007 until he decided to retire in 2016. He was a member of the House of Representatives for the area of Wide Bay from 1990 until his retirement.

Early Life and Local Government

Warren Truss was born in a place called Kingaroy, in Queensland, Australia. He went to school at Concordia Lutheran College in Toowoomba. Before he became a politician, he worked as a farmer, growing beans.

He was also very involved in his local community. He was the chairman of the Sugar Coast Burnett Regional Tourism Board. He also served as a councillor for the Shire of Kingaroy from 1976 to 1990. A councillor helps make decisions for a local area. From 1983 to 1990, he was the Chairman of the Kingaroy Shire Council, which is like being the mayor of that area.

National Politics: A Career in Parliament

Warren Truss first tried to get into state parliament in Queensland in 1988. He ran for the Nationals party in a special election, but he did not win that time.

Joining the Australian Parliament

In 1990, Mr. Truss was elected to the Australian Parliament. He won the seat for Wide Bay, which was a safe area for the National Party. From 1994 to 1996, when his party was not in power, he was part of the "Opposition Shadow Ministry." This means he was preparing for a future government role.

When the Liberal/National Coalition won the election in 1996, Warren Truss was given several important jobs:

  • He was the Deputy Leader of the House from 1997 to 1998.
  • He became the Minister for Customs and Consumer Affairs from 1997 to 1998. This job involved looking after things coming into the country and protecting consumers.
  • He was the Minister for Community Services from 1998 to 1999.
  • From 1999 to 2005, he was promoted to a senior role in the government, serving as the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. This role meant he was in charge of farming, fishing, and forests for the country.

Leading the National Party

In 2005, the leader of the National Party, John Anderson, decided to step down. Mark Vaile became the new leader, and Warren Truss was chosen as the Deputy Leader. After this change, Mr. Truss became the Minister for Transport and Regional Services. This job involved overseeing transport and helping regional areas.

In 2006, Mr. Truss and Mark Vaile swapped their jobs. Warren Truss became the Minister for Trade. This role meant he helped manage Australia's business dealings with other countries. He held this job until the government changed in 2007.

After the 2007 election, Mark Vaile resigned as the National Party Leader. Warren Truss then became the federal leader of the Nationals on 3 December 2007.

When Tony Abbott became the leader of the Coalition in 2009, Warren Truss continued to hold important roles. After the 2010 election, he became the Shadow Minister for Infrastructure and Transport. In this election, he was elected for the Liberal National Party, which was a new group formed by combining two parties in Queensland. However, he continued to lead the Nationals at the national level.

Becoming Deputy Prime Minister

In the 2013 federal election, the Coalition won by a large amount. On 18 September, Warren Truss was sworn in as the Deputy Prime Minister. This was part of a long-standing agreement between the Liberal and National parties, where the leader of the Nationals often becomes the Deputy Prime Minister.

Mr. Truss remained Deputy Prime Minister even after Malcolm Turnbull became Prime Minister in 2015. On 11 February 2016, Warren Truss announced that he would retire from politics. He immediately stepped down as Nationals leader and Deputy Prime Minister. Barnaby Joyce was then chosen as the new leader and Deputy Prime Minister.

During his time as leader, Warren Truss was seen as a steady leader. He helped the National Party gain more seats in the House of Representatives, increasing them from ten seats in 2007 to fifteen seats in 2013.

Awards and Recognition

Warren Truss has received several awards for his service to Australia:

  • On 1 January 2001, he was given the Centenary Medal. This award recognized his work as the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.
  • In 2014, the local council in the South Burnett Region named their main building in Kingaroy the "Warren Truss Chamber." This was to recognize his time as the Mayor of the Kingaroy Shire.
  • In 2019, he was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia. This is a very high honor given for "eminent service" to the Australian Parliament, especially for his work in trade, transport, farming, and helping rural areas.
