Dovepaw soon discovers she has a special ability. She can see, hear, and smell things from very far away. She uses this power to find out why the river is drying up. Beavers have built a dam, blocking the water flow.
Lionblaze realizes Dovepaw is one of the three cats from an important prophecy. He and his brother, Jayfeather, are the other two. Each of them has a unique power. In his dreams, Jayfeather travels back in time. He becomes his past self, Jay's Wing. He must convince the Tribe's ancestors to stay in the mountains. He helps them connect with their ancestor spirits. He also appoints the Tribe's first Teller of the Pointed Stones. This role is like a leader and medicine cat combined. When Jayfeather returns to the present, he appoints Crag Where Eagles Nest as the new Stoneteller. The old Stoneteller had passed away without choosing a successor.

New ThunderClan apprentices, Cherrypaw and Molepaw, encounter a fox. An unknown cat saves them. Lionblaze investigates and finds Sol. Sol is a loner who had caused trouble before. He claims he saved the apprentices. Some cats welcome him, but others do not trust him.
When Sol disappears, Dovewing and Ivypool follow him. They discover he is trying to cause a battle between ThunderClan and WindClan. While spying, they are almost discovered. But Hollyleaf leads them to safety. Everyone thought Hollyleaf had died in a tunnel collapse earlier.
Lionblaze convinces Hollyleaf to return to ThunderClan. Dovewing and Ivypool reveal Sol's plan. They also share that Hollyleaf was the true hero who saved the apprentices. Hollyleaf teaches ThunderClan special battle skills for fighting in tunnels. When WindClan attacks through the tunnels, ThunderClan is ready. They repel the attack and win the battle. Jayfeather receives a new prophecy. It tells him there is a fourth cat in the prophecy, not just three. He first thinks it might be Mothwing, RiverClan's medicine cat. However, there are disagreements among the medicine cats. Some accuse Jayfeather of causing Flametail's loss in Night Whispers.
Jayfeather is allowed to visit RiverClan. Mothwing shows him a reed that has been smoldering for days. Jayfeather takes this as a sign to find Flametail's spirit in StarClan. He convinces Flametail to tell the truth. Flametail reveals he drowned and was not killed by Jayfeather. This truth unites the medicine cats. They then bring StarClan together to prepare for the final battle.
Former ThunderClan leader Bluestar tells Jayfeather the fourth cat is Firestar. The final battle between the Clans and the Dark Forest then begins. Both StarClan and Dark Forest cats appear in physical forms. The battle quickly becomes chaotic. It ends when Firestar bravely faces Tigerstar's spirit. Firestar was gravely injured in this final fight and passed away. This made Brambleclaw the new leader of ThunderClan.
