Warruwi is a special place in Australia. It is an Aboriginal community located on South Goulburn Island. This island is off the coast of Arnhem Land in the West Arnhem Region of the Northern Territory. Warruwi is about 290 kilometers (180 miles) northeast of Darwin. It is also 100 kilometers (62 miles) northeast of Jabiru.
Life in Warruwi
In 2016, a count of people showed that Warruwi and its nearby small communities had 389 residents. These small communities are sometimes called outstations.
Warruwi has important places for the community. There is a school for children to learn. There is also a health clinic to help people stay well. An arts centre allows people to share their culture and create art.
Getting to and from Warruwi is important. FlyTiwi has daily passenger flights to Darwin from the local airport. Larger goods and supplies arrive by a barge, which travels weekly.
People and Languages
The original people who have lived on the Goulburn Islands for a very long time are the Maung people. They are known as the traditional owners of this land.
Many different languages are spoken on the island. These include Mawng, Kunbarlang, Kunwinjku, Djambarrpuyngu, and Galpu. People also speak Australian English.
