About the Show
The series was all about what life was like on a Royal Navy warship. The main ship in the show was a fictional one called HMS Hero. Most of the filming happened on a real ship, the Leander-class frigate called HMS Phoebe.
The Real Ships Used
Even though the show was about one ship, HMS Hero, four different Leander-class frigates actually played the part. These were:
- HMS Phoebe
- HMS Dido
- HMS Hermione
- HMS Jupiter
To make it look real for the show, the crews of these warships were given special hats with "HMS Hero" written on them during filming.
Who Created "Warship"?
The person who came up with the idea for "Warship" was Ian Mackintosh. He was a real Royal Navy officer at the time. Ian Mackintosh also wrote three books that were based on the stories from the TV show. These books were released at the same time in both hardback and paperback. They were:
- Warship (published in 1973)
- HMS Hero (published in 1976)
- Holt RN (published in 1977)
The Music of "Warship"
The opening music for the series was a march. It was played by the Royal Marines and was also called Warship. The music was written by a composer named Anthony Isaac. Even today, this march is still played by Royal Marine bands!
