The Washing Wells Roman Fort was a Roman army base. It was located in Britannia, which was a Roman province (a part of the Roman Empire). You can find its ruins southeast of Whickham in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, England.
History of the Fort
This ancient fort was first found in 1970. It was spotted from an airplane! The fort has a shape like a trapezoid. This means it has four sides, but not all sides are parallel.
The fort measures about 490 feet (149 meters) by 410 feet (125 meters). It covers an area of about 4.5 acres (1.8 hectares). That's a pretty big space!
Even though it was found a while ago, the Washing Wells Roman Fort has not been dug up by archaeologists yet. This means we still have a lot to learn about it.
