Washington Creek is a stream in Sonoma County, California. It flows south and eventually joins the Petaluma River in the city of Petaluma.
Where Washington Creek Flows
Washington Creek starts on the western side of Sonoma Mountain. It flows downhill towards the southwest. The creek flows under Adobe Road. It then runs alongside East Washington Street. It passes through Rooster Run Golf Club and enters the Petaluma suburbs. It also goes under Sonoma Mountain Parkway and Maria Drive.
Another stream, East Washington Creek, joins it from the east. Washington Creek then keeps flowing southwest. It goes under North McDowell Parkway and U.S. 101. After U.S. 101, the creek turns west. It flows under Madison Street and Holly Lane. Finally, it reaches the Petaluma River. This is just north of the Payran Street bridge.
Protecting the Creek's Environment
It is important to keep creeks and rivers clean. Sometimes, pollution can harm the plants and animals living in the water. In 1999, a large amount of farm waste was put into Washington Creek. This caused serious pollution. About 732,000 US gal (2,770 m3) of waste entered the creek.
This event showed how important it is to protect our waterways. Rules and laws help prevent pollution. They make sure that everyone takes care of the environment. Keeping creeks clean helps fish, insects, and other wildlife thrive. It also keeps the water safe for people.
