The Washington Senators Baseball Teams
The First Washington Senators (1901-1960)
The very first team known as the Washington Senators played in Washington, D.C. for a long time. They were part of the American League, one of the two main leagues in Major League Baseball. This team played from 1901 until the end of the 1960 season.
During their time in Washington, the first Senators team won the World Series once. This big win happened in 1924, which was a very exciting time for their fans. After the 1960 season, the team decided to move to a new city. They relocated to Minnesota and became known as the Minnesota Twins.
The Second Washington Senators (1961-1971)
After the first Senators team left, Washington, D.C. did not have a Major League Baseball team for long. A new team was created and began playing in 1961. This new team also took on the name Washington Senators. They also played in the American League.
This second Senators team played in Washington for about ten years. They were active from 1961 until the end of the 1971 season. Like the first team, this second Senators team also moved to a new city. They relocated to Texas and became known as the Texas Rangers.
Baseball in Washington Today
After the second Senators team left in 1971, Washington, D.C. did not have a Major League Baseball team for many years. However, baseball returned to the city in 2005. The current team playing in Washington, D.C. is called the Washington Nationals. They are part of the National League, the other main league in Major League Baseball. The Nationals have continued the city's baseball tradition.
