Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Washington Sewallis Shirley, the 9th Earl Ferrers, was an important British nobleman who lived in the 1800s. He was born on January 3, 1822, and passed away on March 13, 1859, when he was 37 years old.

From 1827 to 1830, he was known as the Honourable Washington Shirley. Then, from 1830 to 1842, he held the title of Viscount Tamworth. These titles showed his place in a noble family.

Early Life and Family

Washington Sewallis Shirley was the older son of Robert William Shirley, who was also a Viscount Tamworth. When his father passed away in 1830, young Washington became the next in line to inherit the family's main title. This meant he was the "heir apparent."

He went to a famous school called Eton College. In 1842, he inherited the title of Earl Ferrers from his grandfather, who was also named Washington. This made him the 9th Earl Ferrers.

Marriage and Children

On July 23, 1844, Earl Ferrers married Augusta Annabella Chichester. Her father was Lord Edward Chichester, who later became the Marquess of Donegall. They got married at a church called St George's, Hanover Square.

Earl Ferrers and Augusta had five children together:

  • A son who was stillborn on July 16, 1845.

  • Lady Augusta Amelia Shirley (born December 25, 1849 – died February 10, 1933). She married Sir Archdale Palmer, 4th Baronet in 1873.
  • The Honourable Devereux Hugh Lupus Shirley (born July 16, 1853 – died February 22, 1854).
