Sewallis Edward Shirley, 10th Earl Ferrers (born January 24, 1847 – died July 26, 1912) was an important British nobleman. He held the title of Earl Ferrers. Before he became Earl, he was known as Viscount Tamworth until 1859. His father was Washington Sewallis Shirley, 9th Earl Ferrers, and his mother was Lady Augusta Annabella Chichester.

Early Life and Education

Sewallis Edward Shirley was born into a noble family in 1847. He grew up with the title of Viscount Tamworth. This was a courtesy title, meaning it was used out of respect because he was the son of an Earl.

He went to Trinity College, Cambridge, a very famous university in England. He studied hard and earned a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in 1867. Later, he earned a Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in 1871.

Public Service and Military Role

After his education, Sewallis Edward Shirley took on several important roles. He became a deputy lieutenant for two counties: Derbyshire and Staffordshire. A deputy lieutenant is a person who helps the Lord-Lieutenant, who is the King or Queen's representative in a county.

He also joined the military. On February 8, 1868, he became a lieutenant in the Staffordshire Yeomanry. This was a special cavalry unit, which means they were soldiers who rode horses. He served in this role for a few years before leaving the military in 1871.

Honors and Justice

Sewallis Edward Shirley received a special honor. He was made a Knight of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem. This is a very old and respected order that does a lot of charity work, especially in healthcare. Being a Knight meant he was recognized for his service and good deeds.

On October 24, 1885, Sewallis Edward Shirley got married. His wife was Lady Ina Maude Hedges-White. They were married at St George's, Hanover Square, a well-known church in London. Lady Ina Maude was the daughter of William Hedges-White, 3rd Earl of Bantry.

Sewallis Edward Shirley, the 10th Earl Ferrers, passed away when he was 65 years old. He and Lady Ina Maude did not have any children. Because he had no children, his title and estates passed to another family member. He was succeeded by Walter Shirley, 11th Earl Ferrers.
