The Waterhen River flows south to Lake Manitoba from Waterhen Lake.

The Waterhen River is an important river located in Manitoba, Canada. It acts like a natural channel, carrying water from one large lake to another. This river is the main way that water leaves Lake Winnipegosis and flows into Lake Manitoba.

About the Waterhen River

The Waterhen River is a key part of the water system in central Manitoba. It helps connect two of the province's biggest lakes. Rivers like the Waterhen are important for the environment, providing homes for fish and other wildlife. They also play a role in the history of the area.

Where the Waterhen River Flows

The journey of the Waterhen River starts near the southeast part of Lake Winnipegosis, specifically at a place called Long Island Bay. From there, two smaller rivers, the West Waterhen and Little Waterhen rivers, flow north for about 16 kilometres (10 mi). They empty into a lake known as Waterhen Lake.

After collecting water from Waterhen Lake, the main Waterhen River then flows south. It travels for about 22 kilometres (14 mi) until it reaches its final destination, Lake Manitoba. This flow helps keep the water levels balanced between these large lakes.

Historical Importance of the Waterhen River

Rivers like the Waterhen have been important for a very long time. In the past, they were like highways for people traveling by canoe. The Hudson's Bay Company, a famous trading company, used rivers to move goods and explore new areas. They often set up trading posts along rivers, which were important meeting places for trade. The Waterhen River was likely used for travel and trade by Indigenous peoples and early European explorers.
