A Big Storm in 1962
On May 24, 1962, Waterville was hit by a very strong tornado. This tornado was so powerful it caused a lot of damage.
Many homes and most of the factory areas were completely destroyed. Half of the Waterville Bible Church was ruined, and the roof of the Sprague School gym was blown away. A lumber company and a cardboard factory were completely wiped out, with pieces of their buildings thrown into the nearby Naugatuck River. Sadly, one person died and 50 people were hurt in the storm.
