History of Wausaukee Village
The name Wausaukee comes from a Menominee word. It means “river in the hills.” This name describes the area well, as a river flows through the village.
The village began in 1863. A man named John S. Monroe bought land and built a mill. This mill helped supply lumber for railroads, which needed wood for bridges.
Monroe's first building was a log cabin. It served as his home and also housed the mill workers. As more people moved to the area, this log cabin grew into an inn. For a long time, it was the only public place to eat north of Green Bay.
On August 19, 2011, an EF1 tornado hit Wausaukee. This type of tornado is considered weak, but it can still cause damage.
