Waverly is a small town in Alabama, a state in the United States. It is located in both Chambers and Lee counties. Waverly became an official town in 1910. In 2010, about 145 people lived there. The town is part of the Auburn Metropolitan Area. Waverly has its own post office and four churches.

Waverly's History

Waverly was first settled in the 1830s. However, it did not grow much until the 1870s. The name "Waverly, Alabama" first appeared on maps in 1853. People sometimes called it "Pea Ridge," but that was never its official name.

Fun Festivals in Waverly

Waverly is known for its exciting annual events. These festivals bring the community together. They also help raise money for the town.

The Annual BBQ

Since October 1990, Waverly has hosted its Annual BBQ. This big event happens on the second Saturday of each October. People can enjoy delicious pork and chicken BBQ. There are also homemade cakes and other sweet treats. Drinks like cold tea and lemonade are served.

Town members work together to prepare the food. They start cooking the stew and smoking the BBQ with hickory wood on Friday evening. This tradition continues until all the food is sold. Food is served from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The event also features singers, dancers, and artists. There are arts and crafts, and even petting zoos. This BBQ is one of Waverly's biggest fundraising events.

The Old 280 Boogie

In 2000, the State of Alabama planned to change U.S. Highway 280. They decided to build the new road south of Waverly. This decision saved the town from being split apart. To celebrate, residents started an annual festival in 2001.

This festival is called the "Waverly Boogie" or "Old 280 Boogie." It is a multi-cultural event. It usually takes place on the third Saturday in April. The Boogie features many different musicians and visual artists. It is held in a special outdoor theater. In 2014, a Fall Boogie was also held in September. That year, a new event, the Heart of Waverly Bluegrass Festival, also started.

Waverly's Location

Waverly is located in the southwest part of Chambers County. Part of the town also extends south into Lee County. The town covers about 7.1 square kilometers (2.7 square miles) of land. A very small part, about 0.05 square kilometers (0.02 square miles), is water.

U.S. Route 280 runs southwest of the town center. This road goes southeast for about 23 kilometers (14 miles) to Opelika. It also goes northwest for about 21 kilometers (13 miles) to Dadeville.
