Weeip facts for kids

Weeip was an important Aboriginal Australian leader. He belonged to the Boora clan, also known as the Boya Ngura people. Weeip was part of the Whadjuk Noongar group. He lived in the 1830s, when the Swan River Colony was just starting in Western Australia.

Who Was Weeip?

Weeip was a respected leader of his people. His territory covered a large area. It stretched from the Helena River and the upper parts of the Swan River. This area is now known as Guildford. His land also reached towards the Darling Scarp.

Weeip's Efforts for Peace

In 1834, Weeip worked to create peace. He met with Governor James Stirling. Their goal was to improve how the Boora people and the British settlers got along. This important meeting happened around the time of a sad event known as the Pinjarra massacre.

Why Was the Truce Important?

During these talks, Weeip's younger son, Billyoomerri, was held in prison. Weeip still chose to negotiate for peace. After the agreement was made, Billyoomerri was set free. This showed Weeip's strong leadership and his desire for a better future for his people.

Weeip Park: A Lasting Tribute

In December 2019, the City of Swan decided to honor Weeip. They named a new public park after him. This park is called Weeip Park. It is located in the Midland New Junction area. Weeip Park officially opened in November 2020. It stands as a reminder of Weeip's legacy and his role in history.
