Weeroona Island is a special place in South Australia. It's a small area of land, not a true island. It's about 209 kilometers (130 miles) north of Adelaide. It's also about 9.5 kilometers (6 miles) northeast of the city of Port Pirie.

This area is unique because it's surrounded by low-lying land. This land can get covered by water during high tides. A special road called a causeway connects Weeroona Island to the main highway.

The Story Behind the Name

Weeroona Island has an interesting history with its name. It was once known as Port Flinders.

How Weeroona Island Got Its Name

The area started as a private land development around 1853. The people who planned it first called it "Port Flinders." Over the years, it had other names like Price Nob and Benjamin Hill. In 1993, the name "Port Flinders" was officially brought back.

However, the people living there really liked the name "Weeroona Island." They showed strong support for it. So, in November 2013, the name was officially changed to Weeroona Island. The name "Weeroona Island" comes from a holiday camp. This camp was run by a company called BHP. It was located near Point Lowly on the eastern coast of Eyre Peninsula.

When Weeroona Island Became Official

The official boundaries for Weeroona Island were set in March 1997. This included the area known as the Weeroona Island Shack Site.
