The Weir River is a river in Manitoba, Canada. It flows through the northern part of the province. This river is part of a huge area where all the water eventually drains into Hudson Bay.

The Weir River starts at a place called Weir Lake. From there, it flows into the Nelson River. The Nelson River is a much bigger river that eventually empties into Hudson Bay. The Weir River joins the Nelson River about 70 kilometers (43 miles) before the Nelson River reaches Hudson Bay.

Exploring the Weir River's Path

The Weir River is located in a part of Manitoba known as the Northern Region. This area is mostly wilderness and is home to many different kinds of wildlife. The river helps carry water from inland lakes towards the sea.

Where the River Flows

The river begins at Weir Lake, which is 186 meters (610 feet) above sea level. It then travels downhill, ending its journey at the Nelson River. At this point, the river is only 20 meters (66 feet) above sea level. This drop in elevation helps the water flow.

The Settlement of Weir River

There is a small community named Weir River that shares its name with the river. This settlement is important because it's a stop on a railway line.

The Railway Connection

The Hudson Bay Railway crosses the Weir River at this settlement. This railway is a key transportation route in northern Canada. It connects places like Winnipeg to Churchill, a town on Hudson Bay.

Travel by Train

The Via Rail Winnipeg–Churchill train uses this railway line. This train service helps people and goods travel through the vast northern parts of Manitoba. The Weir River railway station is a stop for this train.
