Weirdsister College is a British children's TV show about magic. It is a follow-up to the popular series The Worst Witch. The show was shown on ITV in the UK from November 28 to December 14, 2001.

Story of Weirdsister College

The show follows Mildred Hubble (Georgina Sherrington) as she starts her first year at Weirdsister College. This college is a special university for students who want to learn more about magic. Just like at her old school, Cackle's, Mildred often gets into trouble. But she always finds a way to save the day in the end. This series is a bit more serious than The Worst Witch. It features scary creatures and even a possible end-of-the-world event.

About the College

Weirdsister College is located in Cambridge. It is a place where top students from magic schools in Great Britain can continue their magical studies. Teachers and students here work together to try new magic experiments and push the limits of what magic can do. The college has many old traditions and legends. One of these is 'The Agonies', a yearly competition. The winner gets to keep The Golden Cauldron, a very powerful magic item, for one night.

Near the college is Misery's cafe. This is a popular place for the main characters to hang out. It also hosts Jazz concerts, where one character, Thunderblast, plays the trombone. Some students even saved the cafe from closing by using magic to change time! There is also Jenny Wendle's studio in town, where people can go for meditation classes.

The college building itself is very magical. Many spells and magic demonstrations happen there. To stop the building from being destroyed by all this magic, a special "Bus Spell" covers the college and its grounds. This spell means that every Friday, no magic can be performed inside the college. If magic is used on a Friday, strange things can happen, and everything could become chaotic.

Main Characters and Actors

The Teachers

  • Professor Alicia Thunderblast (Charmian May) – She is the head of the college. She is a very experienced witch and loves cakes almost as much as Miss Cackle. She also plays the trombone.
  • Dr. Jenny Wendle (Jaye Griffiths) – She is a first-year teacher and Mildred's guide. She runs a Witches Practice in town. Her knowledge is very important for helping to save the college.
  • Dr. Andy Starfinder (Eric Loren) – An American wizard who likes to mix magic with science and his own inventions. He caused trouble on his second day by using magic on a Friday, which broke the Bus Spell.
  • Professor Johnathan Shakeshaft (John Rogan) – He is the oldest teacher at the college. He teaches many types of magic, but often forgets them. He spends most of his time asleep. Some people say he is a bit crazy or even from medieval times.
  • Veronica Dewdrop (Jenny Galloway) – Students call her 'The Beetle'. She makes sure the Foster's Effect is handled and that the college rules are followed. She also manages the college's money and plans for emergencies.

The Students

  • Mildred Hubble (Georgina Sherrington) – She is the main character from The Worst Witch. Mildred got a scholarship to Weirdsister College because of her art skills. She looks the same until the end of the first episode. Then she cuts off her famous braids after a boy named Nick Hobbes cheats her.
  • Ethel Hallow (Felicity Jones) – Ethel was Mildred's rival at Cackle's. When they first meet at Weirdsister, they have to share a room, and they don't like each other again. Ethel thinks Mildred shouldn't be at the college. But later, they become friends. In one episode, Ethel thinks Mildred is trying to join her experiment team. Ethel and Hobbes also put Mildred and Ben in danger. Mildred had to use Ben's voice to save him from a locked maze with a huge rat. Ethel comes back with a new look but the same attitude.
  • Deirdre "Dee" Swoop (Stephanie Lane) – She graduated from Pentangle's Academy. She is more relaxed in this series. She loves jazz music and takes part in the yearly games.
  • Cas Crowfeather (Abeille Gélinas) – Cas is Mildred's new best friend. She came all the way from Canada to study at Weirdsister. She takes the place of Maud Moonshine, who is not in this series.
  • Nicholas "Nick" Hobbes (Bobby Barry) – A mysterious wizard who is not liked by most students. He has a desire for power. It is also often hinted that he likes Mildred.
  • Azmat Madari (Sacha Dhawan) – A wizard and Tim's best friend. He comes from Clitheroe, Lancashire.
  • Tim Wraithewight (Kent Riley) – A wizard from Bootle near Liverpool and Azmat's best friend.

Other Characters

  • Ben Stemson (Christian Coulson) – He does not have magic. He works at Misery's cafe, which his mother owns. He becomes a very good friend of Mildred, and later her boyfriend. Even though Mildred's magic caused problems for their relationship, he helped save Weirdsister with his science knowledge.
  • Elaine Stemson (Heather Wright) – She owns Misery's cafe. She is interested in New Age Magic and loves her son, Ben, very much. She was very worried when 'The Beetle' threatened to close Misery's.
  • Miss Hardbroom (Kate Duchêne) – She was called by magic to test Mildred. This test was to see if Mildred was strong enough to join Weirdsister College. Mildred passed the test. Miss Hardbroom wished her good luck and smiled before going back to Cackle's.
  • Enid Nightshade (Jessica Fox) – She spent two days at Weirdsister after running away from another magic university called Primrose Hill to see Mildred. Her visit and rebellious actions caused problems between Mildred, Cas, and Ethel. Enid left after saying she hated Primrose Hill because she never fit in and was kicked out for being a bad student and "over-partying."
