History of Welcome
Early Settlers and Naming
People started settling the land near Pecan Creek in the late 1820s. These were mostly Anglo-American families. By 1852, German immigrants began moving into the area. They found it to be a pleasant place to live.
A very important person in the German community was J. F. Schmidt. He was a schoolmaster from Oldenburg, Germany. Schmidt loved the beautiful countryside and the friendly people he met. Because of this, he decided to name the community "Welcome." He even started a singing club!
Growth and Changes Over Time
In 1871, Welcome got its own post office. This was a big step for the small community. By 1936, about 200 people lived in Welcome. There were also four businesses in the area.
However, the population later decreased. By 1950, only about 60 people lived there, and there were just two businesses. But Welcome grew again! By 1965, the number of people living there increased to 175. From 1990 to 2000, the population stayed around 150 people.
