Welwyn was originally the home of Harold Irving Pratt. He was an American oil businessman and someone who gave a lot of money to good causes. He was born in 1877 and passed away in Glen Cove in 1939. Harold Pratt was one of the sons of Charles Pratt, who was also an oil businessman. Charles Pratt started the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York.

The Welwyn estate includes a large house built in 1913. It was designed in a classic style by architects named Delano & Aldrich.
