Wendy Davis (born June 30, 1966) is an American actress. She is best known for her role as Colonel Joan Burton in the Lifetime television drama series Army Wives (2007–2013). For this role, she was nominated three times for the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series.
Early Life
Wendy Davis grew up in Joppatowne, Maryland. She went to Joppatowne High School and later earned a degree in Theater from Howard University. Davis is also a member of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority.
Acting Career
Davis began her acting career by appearing in television comedies. In 1991, she was a regular on the sitcom The New WKRP in Cincinnati, playing the receptionist Ronnie Lee. She also made guest appearances on shows like Martin, The Sinbad Show, and Coach.
From 1996 to 1997, Davis starred as Lynette White in the ABC police drama High Incident, which was created by Steven Spielberg. This series ran for two seasons. After that, she appeared in various television and independent films, including Return to Two Moon Junction (1995). She also guest starred on episodes of Any Day Now, Angel, Cold Case, and Grey's Anatomy.
In 2007, Davis was cast as Colonel Joan Burton in the Lifetime television drama series Army Wives. In this show, she starred alongside Kim Delaney, Catherine Bell, Sally Pressman, and Brigid Brannagh. Davis received three NAACP Image Award nominations for her role as "Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series" in 2008, 2009, and 2011. She was a main cast member from 2007 until 2013, leaving after the seventh season finale. The series was later canceled after seven seasons.
From 2012 to 2013, Davis had a recurring role as Kimberly Mitchell in the second season of the ABC drama series Scandal, created by Shonda Rhimes. She later made guest appearances on other popular shows such as Castle, Criminal Minds, NCIS, and Major Crimes. In 2018, she was cast in a regular role in the Oprah Winfrey Network comedy-drama series Love Is. The series was canceled after one season. More recently, she appeared in Star Trek: Picard (2020) and Bel Air (2022–23).
Personal Life
Wendy Davis has a daughter with her ex-husband, Jacobi Wynne. She and her daughter live in Los Angeles, California.
Davis has openly shared her experiences growing up with ADHD. She has discussed how ADHD helped her as an actress and how she reacted when her daughter received the same diagnosis. She created a series of short videos available on the "Understood" website and YouTube. These videos aim to help parents of children with ADHD, adults with ADHD, and the general public understand more about the condition.
