Kim Delaney (born November 29, 1961) is an American actress. She is well-known for her role as Detective Diane Russell in the TV show `NYPD Blue` on ABC, for which she won an Emmy Award. Earlier in her career, she played Jenny Gardner in the ABC daytime drama `All My Children`. She also had important roles in `Philly`, `CSI: Miami`, and `Army Wives`. She also appeared as reporter Alex Devlin in `Tour of Duty`.

Kim Delaney's Early Life
Delaney was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is the only daughter among five children. Her mother was a homemaker, and her father was a senior official in a labor union. She grew up in the Roman Catholic faith. Kim has four brothers: Ed, John, Keith, and Patrick.
While attending J. W. Hallahan Catholic Girls High School, she worked as a model for the Elite agency. After graduating, she moved to New York and continued modeling. At the same time, she studied acting with William Esper.
Kim Delaney's Acting Career Beginnings
Kim Delaney first became famous for playing the innocent teenager Jenny Gardner Nelson on the `soap opera` `All My Children`. This was her very first acting job. She played this character from August 1981 to August 1984. She was even nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award in 1983. Fans really loved her character. Even years later, people would remember her as Jenny.
After leaving `All My Children`, Kim started acting in `feature films`. In 1985, she was in `That Was Then... This Is Now` with Emilio Estevez. This movie was based on a book by S. E. Hinton. In 1986, she played a young `nun` in the military action movie `The Delta Force`, which starred Chuck Norris.
In 1987, Kim was cast in `Some Kind of Wonderful`. She also appeared in `Christmas Comes to Willow Creek` and `L.A. Law`. In 1988, she starred in the thriller `The Drifter`.
Kim Delaney's Television Roles
In 1988, Kim Delaney became a regular on the CBS TV series `Tour of Duty`. She left the show in 1989 to have her son. Her character was written off the show by being killed in an explosion.
In 1995, Kim started playing Detective Diane Russell on `NYPD Blue`. She was only supposed to be in four episodes at first. But her character's relationship with Detective Bobby Simone (Jimmy Smits) became very popular with viewers. So, her role became permanent. For this role, she was nominated three times for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. She won the award at the 1997 Emmy Awards.
In 2001, the producer of `NYPD Blue`, Steven Bochco, chose Kim for the main role in a new TV series called `Philly`. Because of this, her character was written out of `NYPD Blue`. Even though critics liked `Philly`, the show only lasted one season.
In 2002, Kim Delaney was the main female lead in the new CBS drama series `CSI: Miami`. This show was a spin-off from the popular `CSI: Crime Scene Investigation`. She left the series after just 10 episodes.
After returning for a few episodes of `NYPD Blue`, Kim starred in the 2004 NBC miniseries `10.5` and its 2006 sequel, `10.5: Apocalypse`. She then had a recurring role on `The O.C.`. In 2006, Kim Delaney starred in an episode of `Nightmares & Dreamscapes: From the Stories of Stephen King` called "You Know They Got a Hell of a Band." She also appeared twice on `Law & Order: Special Victims Unit` in 2007.
Kim Delaney played the main role of Claudia Joy Holden on the `Lifetime Television` series `Army Wives`. In November 2012, it was announced that Kim would not be returning for the show's seventh season. Her character was written out of the show by passing away.
In early 2016, Kim Delaney was cast in `God Bless the Broken Road`, a movie based on a song. It was released in 2018. In September 2020, Kim joined the cast of `General Hospital` as Jackie Templeton. She first appeared on the show on October 6, 2020.
Kim Delaney's Personal Life
Kim Delaney has been married three times. She married actor Charles Grant in 1984. She was married to actor Joseph Cortese from 1989 to 1994. They have a son named Jack, who was born around 1990. She married James Morgan on October 11, 2022.
In March 2025, Kim Delaney was arrested following a disagreement with her husband, James Morgan. Morgan was also arrested.
