Dr. Werner Münch is a German politician born on September 25, 1940, in Bottrop, Germany. He is known for his work in German politics, especially after Germany became one country again. He was a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party for many years.

Werner Münch's Early Career

Werner Münch studied at the University of Freiburg. He became a political scientist, which means he studied how governments and political systems work. Before Germany reunited, he was a Member of the European Parliament. This important role meant he helped make decisions for countries in Europe. He represented the region of Lower Saxony from 1984 to 1990.

Leading Saxony-Anhalt

After Germany reunited, Werner Münch moved to Saxony-Anhalt. This is a state in Germany. He became the first Finance Minister for Saxony-Anhalt in November 1990. His job was to manage the state's money.

Becoming Minister-President

In July 1991, Werner Münch became the Minister-President of Saxony-Anhalt. This is like being the head of the state government. He took over from Gerd Gies. He worked hard to lead the state during a time of big changes.

Why He Left Office

Werner Münch served as Minister-President until December 1993. He decided to step down after some disagreements about payments. Christoph Bergner then took over as the new Minister-President.

Later Political Life

Werner Münch continued to be involved in politics. He was a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party for 37 years. This is a very long time to be part of one political group!

Leaving the CDU Party

On February 25, 2009, Werner Münch decided to leave the CDU party. He explained that he felt the party had changed its direction. He believed it was no longer focusing on some of the traditional ideas he valued. After leaving the CDU, he became an independent politician. This means he does not belong to any specific political party.
