Werner Schneyder's Life and Career
Werner Schneyder was born in Graz, Austria. His father was from Vienna, and his mother was from Karlsbad. He grew up in a town called Klagenfurt.
In 1954, Schneyder began studying publicism (which is about how information is spread to the public) and art history in Vienna. At the same time, he worked as a freelance journalist, writing about sports and local news. He also sang in bars.
After he finished his studies and earned a PhD, he worked for advertising companies. From 1962, he was a dramaturge (someone who helps choose and prepare plays) at the Salzburger Landestheater and then at the Landestheater Linz. By 1965, he became a freelance writer. This meant he wrote and directed radio shows and worked for newspapers.
Werner Schneyder lived in Vienna and near the Millstätter See lake. He was married to his wife Ilse from 1961 until she passed away from cancer in 2005. Their son, Achim, was born in 1964 and also became a writer and journalist. In 2011, Schneyder married Regine Bulling in Spittal an der Drau.
Werner Schneyder was found dead at his home in Vienna on March 2, 2019. He was cremated, and his ashes are buried in the Vienna Central Cemetery.
His Work in Kabarett
In 1973, another performer named Kurt Weinzierl saw Werner Schneyder perform. He thought Schneyder would be a great partner for Dieter Hildebrandt. Hildebrandt's political kabarett group, Münchner Lach- und Schießgesellschaft, had recently ended.
So, Schneyder and Hildebrandt teamed up in April 1974. Over eight years, they created five different shows together. These shows included Talk täglich, Lametta & Co., and Ende der Spielzeit. They performed together until 1982.
They had one more show together in 1985. It was called Zugabe Leipzig (Leipzig encore) and they performed it in GDR, which was a country that no longer exists today.
Werner Schneyder's very last performance was on January 25, 2017. This was his 80th birthday. He performed a show called Das war's von mir at the Akademietheater in Vienna.
Werner Schneyder's Books and Writings
Werner Schneyder wrote many different kinds of things. He wrote short, clever sayings called aphorisms. He also wrote short stories (Erzählungen), poems, and satire (which uses humor to criticize people or ideas).
In 1982, he wrote a special book about the famous writer Erich Kästner. It was called Erich Kästner – ein brauchbarer Autor. He also published a book of poems called Reimzeit (which means "time for rhyming") and essays titled Ansichten eines Solisten.
His Career in Sports
Werner Schneyder was a sports journalist even when he was a student. Because of his work in kabarett, he made connections with the television station ZDF. This led to him becoming a host for das aktuelle sportstudio starting in 1975. This was a popular sports show.
He also became a boxing commentator for the Olympics on ZDF. He reported on boxing at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, the 1988 games in Seoul, and the 1992 games in Barcelona. Later, from 1992 to 1999, he continued to comment on boxing for RTL.
