Wesley Joel Matthews Sr. (born August 24, 1959) is a former professional basketball player from the United States. He played in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Wes is famous for winning two NBA championships with the Los Angeles Lakers. His son, also named Wesley Matthews, also became an NBA player.

Playing Basketball: Wes Matthews' Career

Wes Matthews started his basketball journey at Warren Harding High School in Bridgeport, Connecticut. After high school, he played college basketball at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He was a point guard, which is a player who usually brings the ball up the court and helps set up plays.

Joining the NBA

In 1980, Wes was chosen by the Washington Bullets in the NBA draft. This was a big step for him! He played for nine seasons in the NBA. During his time in the league, he played for several teams. These included the Bullets, the Atlanta Hawks (twice!), the Philadelphia 76ers, the Chicago Bulls, the San Antonio Spurs, and the Los Angeles Lakers.

Winning Championships

Wes Matthews is well-known for his time with the Los Angeles Lakers. He helped the Lakers win two NBA championships in a row! They won in 1987 and again in 1988. This is a huge achievement for any basketball player. Throughout his NBA career, he scored a total of 3,654 points. He also made 1,955 assists, which means he helped his teammates score many times.

Playing Around the World

After his NBA career, Wes continued to play basketball professionally until 1996. He played in other leagues in the United States, like the United States Basketball League and the Continental Basketball Association. He also played internationally! He spent time playing in Italy for a team called Ranger Varese.

Wes also played in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). In 1991, he won a special award there called the "Best Import of the Conference" while playing for Ginebra San Miguel. This shows how skilled he was, even when playing in different countries.

Personal Life

Wes Matthews has a son named Wesley Matthews. Just like his dad, Wesley Jr. also became a professional basketball player. He played college basketball for Marquette University before joining the NBA in 2009.
