A Look at Wessington's Past
Wessington got its start a long time ago. A post office opened here in 1882. The city was named after the nearby Wessington Hills.
The city grew because of the railroad. It became a place where local farmers could easily ship their grains. This made it cheaper for them to send their products to other places. Because of this, more businesses decided to open in Wessington. The city first started in Beadle County. Over time, it grew so much that it expanded into Hand County too.
In 1918, Wessington had a busy business making natural ice. This ice was used to keep food fresh in refrigerated train cars. The area is also known for its cattle industry. Farmers there have worked hard to improve their herds. They have made sure their cattle are top quality for the nation's food supply. Many local cattle producers have even won national awards for their work.
