West Hopkinton's Past
West Hopkinton used to be a very busy village. It had many businesses. These included several mills, like the Kingsbury & Davis Machine Company. There was also a creamery (where dairy products are made) and a grocery store. Many farms were working in the area too.
Early Services and Transportation
West Hopkinton had its own post office. It first opened on May 29, 1857. There was also a small train station. This station was part of the original Contoocook River Railroad line. Important bridges like the Rowell's Covered Bridge and New Henniker Bridge were also in the village.
Building the Hopkinton-Everett Dams
In the early 1900s, the Northeast had a lot of flooding. To help stop this, plans were made for two large dams. These were the Hopkinton-Everett Dams. The Hopkinton Dam was built very close to West Hopkinton. It was placed on the Contoocook River. The Everett Dam was built on the Piscataquog River in Weare.
Dams Completion and Flood Control
Both dams were finished in 1962. They help control floods in the area. The land around the dams is now used for flood control. An artificial channel connects the two river valleys. This channel helps move water between the rivers.
