West Pittsburg is a small community in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. It is known as a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's a place that the government counts for population, but it doesn't have its own separate local government like a city or town.
In 2010, about 808 people lived in West Pittsburg. The community is located in the Beaver River valley. It is about 5 miles (8 km) south of a city called New Castle. The main road in West Pittsburg is Pennsylvania Route 168. This road goes north and south and crosses the river at the community's southern end. West Pittsburg is also about 46 miles (74 km) north-northwest of the big city of Pittsburgh.
West Pittsburg's Big Train Station
Even though West Pittsburg is a small community, it once had one of the largest train stations in the northern Pittsburgh area. The Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad (P&LE) built this big station. They thought West Pittsburg would become a very important place for trains.
The P&LE railroad hoped that other train companies, like the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and the Western Allegheny Railroad, would also use this hub. However, West Pittsburg never became the major train center they expected. Over time, these older railroad companies stopped operating.
Today, two companies, CSX Transportation and the Buffalo and Pittsburgh Railroad, still use the train yard near the West Pittsburg Station. They use it to move goods to cities like Pittsburgh, Butler, Cleveland, New Castle, and Youngstown.
